Felix Humble, a Cambridge astrophysicist, returns to his family home in the English countryside after the sudden death of his father. He is seeking peace and quiet, but what he finds is a garden in full bloom and his family life in utter chaos.
His mother, the formidable Flora, seems more interested in her new nose and her budding romance with the brash George Pye than in mourning her late husband. Adding to the mix is Mercy, a well-meaning but meek neighbour, and Rosie, George’s daughter and a figure from Felix’s past.
As the long summer days unfold, family secrets are unearthed, old wounds are reopened, and the buzzing of the garden’s beehive seems to echo the simmering tensions. Can Felix unravel the mysteries of the universe and, more importantly, the secrets of his own heart?
Humble Boy is a witty and poignant comedy about a dysfunctional family, a love triangle, and the search for happiness. With its sharp dialogue and keenly observed characters, this is a play that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure. A must-see for anyone who has ever felt that their family is a puzzle they can’t quite solve.
Directed by Christopher Matthews, starring James Laming, Lisa Dada, Chris Wadley, Rhian Stroud and David Mackay.
Production runs from Monday October 13th to Saturday October 18th, all tickets £10
